Participants Biography:

Alex Barajas is from Colombia and he is having Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. At FIU he is finishing a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems.

Carla Garcia is a 22 year old geosciences major at Florida International University. She was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She moved to Miami in 2002, where she finished high school and applied to FIU as a physics major. After completing her first two years of university, she enrolled in an international exchange program to study geology at the University of Iceland. She studied arctic geology for one year in Reykjavik and came back to FIU to declare her major as geosciences. She expects to graduate after Spring 2010. Carla has an identical twin sister and enjoys hiking, reading, drawing and drinking tea.

Charles Castello earned his Bachelor and Master degrees from Florida International University (FIU) in Computer Engineering during the Spring 2007 and 2009 semesters respectively. He is currently a PhD Candidate at FIU in Electrical Engineering as well as a Research Assistant and Department of Energy Fellow at Applied Research Center (ARC) under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Leonel Lagos and Dr. David Roelant. Charles has also interned at General Electric: Consumer and Industrial in Louisville, KY and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN. Charles has also taken part in international research collaborations at Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Hsinchu, Taiwan with his advisor, Dr. Jeffrey Fan from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Charles' research interests include sensor networks, Very-Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) design, and in-situ methods of measuring methyl-mercury.

Charles Guillaume has just completed his Bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering and is planning to apply for graduate school.

Dipak Rimal is a Ph.D. student in Computational Biophysics from Florida international University. He did his Master's degree in Physics from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. He is focussing on research in understanding the protein aggretation and folding through the use of computer simulations.

Jingxuan Li is a first year PhD student at FIU. He is currently working in PRIME project.

Selim Kalayci - is a Ph.D Candidate in Computer Science at FIU. He got his B.S degree from Fatih University, Turkey, and M.S. degree from FIU. His research interests include Grid Computing, Distributed Computing, Service Oriented Computing, and Scientific Workflows. Some of his research results have been published in SEKE, CCGrid, and ICSOC conferences among others.

Konstantinos Menelaou is from Greece hold a bachelor degree in Earth Science with a major in Meteorology/Climatology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. Now he is doing Master's at Florida International University and his research activities concern simulations of hurricane boundary layer.

Kulasekaran Devarajan is a Master's student in School of Computing and Information Sciences, Florida International University. He holds his bachelor degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Anna University, India. He worked as a Software Engineer for 2 years at TATA Consultancy Services Limited, India as an Oracle 9i PL/SQL developer and Functional Designer and now he is a part of Global Cyberbridges Projects.

Melita Jaric is a first year PhD student at FIU. Her advisor is Dr. Rishe. She has Bachelor's degree (BEE) from City College of New York and Master's degree (MECE) from Carnegie Mellon University. She had worked in audio and image processing field for 10 years before joining FIU.

Miguel Erazo was born in La Paz, Bolivia. He graduated from the University of Saint Andrews in 1999 from Electronics Engineering, specializing in Telecommunications. Later, he moved to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in 2004 to continue his studies as a Master's student of Computer Engineering. He graduated from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez in the summer of 2006. Currently, he is a PhD candidate of Computer Science at Florida International University. His research interests are: Simulation of computer networks, design and performance evaluation of MAC protocols for wireless networks, and congestion control algorithms for high-speed networks.

Priyanka Narendar was born and brought up in India .She  has her bachelor degree in Biotechnology from Anna University, India. Her undergraduate research focused on Biological control of insect pest Tribolium casteneum using entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae.  She has joined the department of Environmental Studies at FIU for the fall 2008 for the master's program.  Her major advisor is Dr. Krish Jaychandran. She is currently working on "Screening of  various algal strains isolated from South florida for its potential in biodiesel production".

Reng Zeng is a 2nd-year Ph.D student in Computer Science of FIU, working on formal verification with advisor Dr. He. He received his bachelor degree from University of Science and Technology of China in 2003. He spent 4 years in industry before joining FIU.

Ricardo Leante is a student at FIU in the department of Physics. His concentration is on Nuclear Physics.

Stephen Wood is currently completing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering with the goal of attaining a Ph.D. He serves the College of Engineering as the Vice-Chair for External Affairs for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is dedicated to advancing the models and techniques of multi-disciplinary design and optimization. Stephen also participates in research at the Multidisciplinary Analysis, Inverse Design, Robust Optimization and Control Laboratory that allows Stephen to develop analytic skills to facilitate his DOE research. Currently, Stephen is assisting Dr. Dwayne McDaniel and Dr. Seckin Golaktun with their investigation of the performance of selected methods in dislodging radioactive waste from pipelines at DOE Sites. His parallel and future work involves modeling of the waste materials and conditions in the tanks and pipelines which give rise to blockages and the optimization of dislodging methods.

Su Liu is a first year phd student in Florida International University. He graduated from Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China (China Top 10), major in Software Engineering, by 2008. His advisor is Dr. Xudong He. His research interest is formal method on software engineering. Currently he is working on a project "SCscript", which is a complier for SC language. He is going to work on agent system with Petri Nets.
